Life is like a trip down the rapids....
As I drove to work this morning, I thought about how you go through different stages in life and I laughed to myself as I thought about how it's a bit like being faced with a ravine of white water rapids. We all live within a given timeline, whether we think we do or we don't.
Some of us live in the past, and that's a bit like waiting at the top of the rapids and looking back to why the hell we chose to be up here. It was much better before we were faced with this situation and we wished we hadn't climbed up to the top of this. What on earth possessed us to do this? We want to go back to where we were comfortable, the people we were with at that time and the enjoyment we had back then. Hell, we even reminisce about how we left that part of our lives and started climbing up to the top of here and how far we have come and how much we have achieved... but a part of us still wants to go back to that place in the past because it was familiar. We were obviously not completely happy, otherwise we would not have left! Yet here we are, looking back forlornly!
Some of us live in the future. I am very guilty of this! I find myself looking down the rapids thinking, Shit! How am I going to do this then? I long for that little calm serene pool of tranquillity at the very bottom where my boat can come to a complete standstill and I can sit back and listen to the birds and take a deep breath knowing the storms are all over and I'm happy and comfortable and safe! I want the knowledge that I don't need to negotiate rapids anymore, because life is easy and peachy! I don't want any difficulties ahead!
And then there is the most fortunate timeline to live in... the present! And not nearly enough of us do this. This is where you are at the top of the rapids and you are literally buzzing. You are looking down at the expanse you are about to travel and you are excited. Wow... where is this going to take me? This is going to be amazing and fun and full of the unknown.
The unknown can be scary but it is also very exciting. Who wants to get to the destination without a story to tell? As you face your own rapids in life you will have moments that you feel like you will capsize... and you may well capsize. It is all about dragging yourself to safety, catching your breath and continuing on. Sometimes we find ourselves in a little calm basin at the side. We take a moment to breathe, but then we become comfortable with the easiness of being in this still water. We find this so agreeable compared to the choppiness ahead that we stay here for far too long. This can relate to our relationships, our finances, our jobs.... any multitude of situations! We stay because the road ahead is full of uncertainty and it feels like there are potential dangers to our way of existing, and that scares us. Fear can freeze us to the spot and freeze us in our situation despite the desperate need for movement... and sometimes we just have to look ahead and jump, hoping there are branches overhead we can grab and steady us against the turbulence we are about to face.
But, move forward we must, no matter how scary and unpredictable the path may seem as there are always better times ahead. If we just go with the flow and let things unfold as they are intended, we will always find a moment of calm and serenity along the way and branches we need to steady us overhead seem to materialise from nowhere when you least expect it. So enjoy the journey, and when you get to where you are meant to be, you can wholeheartedly say, "Wow!! That was an amazing journey, and I made it!"
